The Loved Drones : Red City (Freaksville Records)
The Loved Drones : Red City
‘Red City’ is a gothic-romantic pop single with a driving rhythm but it doesn’t do it justice simply to list its mindblowing mix of influences; the whole is definitely greater than the sum of the parts. It’s been fashioned from a range of genres: from giallosoundtracks and Italian prog rock to acid folk (that crazed flute!) and Krautrock (especially the Can-like vocals, when they eventually kick in). The band have been backing people like Damo Suzuki and Laetitia Sadier and it sounds time for the Anglo-Belgians to do their own thing; on the basis of the earworming ‘Red City’, it might be a memorable move.
